Concerning AI

We’ve thought a great deal about the advanced Machine Learning models that are presently calling themselves AI. For good reason, too: We’re a science fiction outlet, and these represent the bleeding edge of science as creativity assist tools.

We’re also deeply concerned about the doubtful morality of data-scraping, and the other less than savory methods by which many of these tools have been trained to imperfectly emulate human creativity. Some of these corporations have danced on the line of plagiarism; others have overtly crossed it, sneering at weakly written laws that fail to protect the legitimate rights of creators.

Classic Fascists: Winning The Points Game

The new Standard Fascist is a fairly normal race to play. Due to their new Fast Beams advantage, they become competitive on the battlefield, and can actually fight enemy carriers and starbases with respectable force. Granted, they’re still weak in other ways — they have the second-worst battleship in the game, next to the Crystals — but they can be played traditionally and still win.

In Classic, however, or with the D19C campaign hull enabled, Fascists gain the ability to pursue victory through ship counts and Priority Build Points rather than planets. Here’s how:

Moments Of Change

I heard this story from a customer — older fellow, well-dressed if a bit seedy, with an accent that proclaimed his birth somewhere in eastern Europe. I’m repeating it as he told it to me, with no guarantees. It seems true, but then a lot of things do.


It’s true what they say, that every decision you make spawns an alternate reality. What they forget is how rare actual decisions are. Trust me on this; I’ve been able to see them for years, and they’re far from common.
